Despite the bad that Facebook (or Google, Amazon, etc.) has facilitated, we must not ignore all the good these platforms have brought. In other words, they are no more evil or kind than anything else that has ever existed in the world: used wisely, they are brilliant; yet if abused, they are terrible. So the focus shouldn’t be to quit Facebook, but how to use Facebook wisely. Or more potently, how to emphasize basic logic and fact-checking in the education system so that our kids (perhaps there is little hope on this for adults already)will grow up mentally prepared for using Facebook and the likes.
To me, the social media/big data tech companies hurried us into a new era we are not ready for, hence all the controversies. Should these tech companies do better? Of course. But should we simply quit them instead of finding a solution to the problems? I don’t think so. To me, quitting Facebook or the likes simply because they can be abused for evil is similar to quitting electricity simply because it can kill people. For electricity, we have built protection mechanism and educated ourselves to not stick a fork into the outlet. So for Facebook and the likes, we should do the same: build protection and reinforce education.
